ICF MCC Exam Sample Questions

There's no separate MCC exam with harder questions written for you. PCC and MCC candidates take the same test, scored to the same standard.

There's no separate MCC exam. PCC and MCC candidates sit the same ICF Credentialing Exam, scored to the same passing standard. Two practice questions below, in the exam's own best-and-worst format.

One exam, one score

In the current format it is the same 78 situational judgment items, the same 180-minute sitting, the same four-option best-and-worst format, and the same passing score of 460 on a 200 to 600 scale. Nothing about the exam changes based on which credential you're applying for.

That can feel odd when you've coached for fifteen or twenty years and you're taking the same test as someone earlier in their career. It is the same test.

Question 1

Establishes and Maintains Agreements (3.4, 3.3, 2.1) · Domain B: Co-Creating the Relationship

A mid-level director at a healthcare system has been in a company-sponsored coaching engagement for six weeks. In the kick-off, she and her manager co-created goals around strategic thinking and cross-functional influence, both areas she identified as personally meaningful to her development. Three sessions in, the coach receives a call from the HR sponsor. The organization has just launched a communication excellence initiative tied to a leadership competency framework, and the sponsor wants to pivot the coaching goals to executive communication immediately. The client has not been part of this conversation.

How should the coach respond? Pick the best and the worst.

A. Explain that the goals were co-created and suggest a three-way conversation to discuss any change together.

B. Update the goals because the organization has changed priorities and the sponsor is funding the engagement.

C. Tell the sponsor you will raise the new priority with the client and encourage flexibility in the next session.

D. Keep the original goals and decline any further discussion with the sponsor about changes.

Question 2

Demonstrates Ethical Practice (1.6, 1.4, 3.11) · Domain A: Foundation

A client has been coaching with the same coach for over a year. The original goals around executive communication were completed months ago. Since then, the client has extended the engagement three times without setting new goals. Today she says, "I just like having this space. It's the one hour a week that's purely mine." The coach notices the client consistently avoids naming what she wants to work on.

What is the most effective next step for the coach? Pick the best and the worst.

A. Acknowledge the value she is describing and explore openly what the coaching is for at this stage of the work.

B. Accept that the engagement is serving a real need and continue without a formal goal structure.

C. Suggest that if she values reflection time, a journaling practice might serve the same function at lower cost.

D. Point out that she's a paying adult free to spend her time as she likes, and continue without raising the question again.

More than the official set

A new PCC-MCC exam starts November 10, 2026: 80 items, 44 situational judgment and 36 multiple choice, in 150 minutes. The current 78-item exam stays available through March 31, 2027, so check which version lines up with your test date.

ICF's own sample set is small. That's not much to build judgment against, especially for scenarios you've never seen before.

CredentialPrep's PCC/MCC practice questions run 202 scenarios, with full best-and-worst reasoning for each. That is closer to the repetition this takes.
