The timeline
What changes, and when
Source: ICF Mentor Coach Update
If you are already a mentor coach, nothing breaks. Your hours and sessions are grandfathered. The change affects new applicants and coaches seeking to renew with MCS status.
Per ICF's announced 2027 transition, mentors working with PCC and MCC candidates must document observed sessions using structured Session Observation Forms. One per session observed.
Competency Reviews (structured written assessments tied to ICF markers) become required for credential-path work. Mentors who meet volume and documentation thresholds can apply for Mentor Coaching Supervisor (MCS) status.
How CredentialPrep helps
Three tools for the new pathway
Generate a structured Session Observation Form from any audio or transcript. Each form maps coach behaviors to ICF competency markers with space for your written observations. One click to export as a Word document.
After reviewing a session, run a full competency review. CredentialPrep scores each marker, surfaces evidence from the transcript, and drafts the written narrative. You edit and sign off.
Track your sessions, hours, and documentation completeness in one place. See at a glance where you stand against the MCS threshold so there are no surprises at application time.
Good news on group sessions
Group sessions count toward the 10-hour requirement
Per ICF's guidance, up to 7 of the required 10 mentoring hours may be delivered in a group format. Group sessions are not subject to the new Session Observation Form requirement. CredentialPrep tracks group and 1:1 hours separately so your log reflects the right split automatically.

Questions
Common questions
Do I need to do anything now if I'm already an approved mentor coach?
Not right now. The 2027 changes apply at the point of renewal or new application. If you are mid-engagement with a candidate, your current work continues normally. Starting to document in structured forms before the deadline is a good idea.
How is a Session Observation Form different from notes I already take?
ICF's announced format requires documentation tied specifically to competency markers, with a field-by-field structure. Freeform notes usually do not satisfy this. CredentialPrep generates the form in the required format so you do not have to rebuild your note-taking process from scratch.
Can I use CredentialPrep with group mentoring sessions?
Yes. Group sessions are supported: up to 7 of the required 10 mentoring hours may be delivered in a group format. CredentialPrep tracks group vs. 1:1 hours separately and flags when you have reached the group session cap.
What is the difference between MCS status and being a mentor coach?
Mentor coach is the baseline credential: you are approved to deliver mentoring hours to candidates. MCS (Mentor Coaching Supervisor) is an additional designation for mentors who meet documentation and volume requirements under the 2027 pathway. MCS mentors will be searchable in a separate ICF directory.
Is CredentialPrep affiliated with ICF?
No. CredentialPrep is an independent preparation tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by ICF or Pearson VUE. All references to ICF requirements are based on publicly available ICF documentation.
